First African-American Female Full Professor in the College of Education at UNCC

Dr. Gloria D. Campbell-Whatley, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, came to Charlotte in 2003. She is employed at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). Dr. Campbell-Whatley received her BA from Dillard University, her MA from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and her doctorate from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She was previously employed at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Indiana where she was the first African-American female to earn tenure. She came to UNC Charlotte to join the Special Education and Child Development Department in the College of Education. This year, she was the first African-American female that was promoted from the rank of Associate Professor to Full Professor in the College of Education, and the third African-American woman who was promoted to the rank of Full Professor at UNC Charlotte.

She has produced 4 books and numerous journal articles and training manuals. Her current texts are Leadership Practices for Special and General Educators (textbook-Pearson, 2013) and A School Leader’s Guide to Implementing the Common Core: Inclusive Practices for All Students (2016-Routledge-Taylor /Francis). She presently has a book contract with Teachers’ College Press with 2020 as a projected publication date. Her books are in 364 libraries across the world and have been adopted by 34 universities. She has delivered 150 keynotes, presentations and workshops in the United States and in 7 countries abroad.
